MWA

Microwave Ablation (MWA) for Thyroid Nodules

Microwave ablation (MWA) is an advanced, minimally invasive treatment used to reduce the size of benign thyroid nodules while preserving normal thyroid function. It is an excellent option for patients who want relief from symptoms without surgery or a scar. Although many thyroid nodules are harmless, they can sometimes grow large enough to cause visible swelling, pressure in the neck, difficulty swallowing, discomfort, or overproduction of thyroid hormone. In the past, treatment often required surgery, radioactive iodine, or long-term medication. MWA offers a modern alternative with less downtime and fewer risks.

How Microwave Ablation Works

During the procedure, a thin probe is placed directly into the thyroid nodule using precise ultrasound guidance. Local anesthesia is used to keep you comfortable. The probe delivers controlled microwave energy that creates heat within the nodule, destroying targeted tissue while protecting the surrounding thyroid gland.
Over the following months, the body naturally reabsorbs the treated tissue, and the nodule gradually shrinks.

What are the Benefits of Thyroid MWA

  • No surgical incision or visible scar
  • Preserves most or all normal thyroid tissue
  • Minimal recovery time
  • Outpatient procedure with local anesthesia
  • Lower risk than traditional surgery
  • Little to no interruption of daily activities
  • Avoids general anesthesia in most cases
  • Reduced risk of voice changes or parathyroid injury compared with surgery
Many patients experience a 50–80% reduction in nodule size within the first year, with continued improvement over time.

What to Expect

MWA is typically performed in the office or outpatient setting and usually takes 20 to 60 minutes, depending on the size and complexity of the nodule. Most patients return to normal activities within a day or two. Mild soreness, swelling, or tenderness in the treatment area can occur temporarily and usually resolves quickly.

Is MWA Right for You?

MWA may be recommended for patients with:
  • Benign thyroid nodules causing pressure, discomfort, or cosmetic concerns
  • Nodules causing excess thyroid hormone production
  • Patients who prefer a non-surgical treatment option
  • Individuals who want to avoid general anesthesia or thyroid surgery
A consultation, ultrasound evaluation, and review of prior biopsy results can help determine whether MWA is the best treatment option for you.
