Ethanol ablation

Ethanol Ablation for Benign Cystic Thyroid Nodules

Ethanol ablation is a minimally invasive, ultrasound-guided treatment used for benign cystic thyroid nodules. These nodules are fluid-filled or partially fluid-filled growths in the thyroid that can enlarge over time and cause visible swelling, pressure in the neck, discomfort, difficulty swallowing, or cosmetic concerns. During this outpatient procedure, the fluid is first drained from the nodule using a small needle. A carefully measured amount of sterile ethanol is then placed into the cyst cavity. The ethanol works by collapsing the cyst lining and preventing the fluid from reaccumulating, allowing the nodule to shrink over time. Ethanol ablation is a safe and effective alternative to surgery for appropriately selected patients. It can significantly reduce nodule size and improve symptoms without the need for an incision, general anesthesia, or a prolonged recovery.

What are the Benefits of Ethanol Ablation

  • No surgical incision or scar
  • Performed in the office or outpatient setting
  • Minimal discomfort and quick recovery
  • Preserves normal thyroid tissue and function
  • Effective treatment for recurrent cystic nodules
  • Lower cost and less downtime than surgery
  • Most patients return to normal activities the same day or next day

What to Expect

The procedure is typically completed in 15 to 30 minutes. Local anesthetic may be used to maximize comfort. Mild soreness or temporary swelling in the treatment area can occur but usually resolves quickly. Some nodules respond after a single treatment, while larger or recurrent cystic nodules may require more than one session for the best result.

Is Ethanol Ablation Right for You?

Ethanol ablation may be recommended for patients with:
  • Benign cystic or predominantly cystic thyroid nodules
  • Nodules causing pressure, discomfort, or visible enlargement
  • Recurrent cysts after prior drainage
  • Patients who prefer a non-surgical treatment option
A consultation, ultrasound evaluation, and review of prior biopsy results can help determine whether ethanol ablation is the best treatment option for you.
