Ethanol Ablation for Benign Cystic Thyroid Nodules
Ethanol ablation is a minimally invasive, ultrasound-guided treatment used for benign cystic thyroid nodules. These nodules are fluid-filled or partially fluid-filled growths in the thyroid that can enlarge over time and cause visible swelling, pressure in the neck, discomfort, difficulty swallowing, or cosmetic concerns.
During this outpatient procedure, the fluid is first drained from the nodule using a small needle. A carefully measured amount of sterile ethanol is then placed into the cyst cavity. The ethanol works by collapsing the cyst lining and preventing the fluid from reaccumulating, allowing the nodule to shrink over time.
Ethanol ablation is a safe and effective alternative to surgery for appropriately selected patients. It can significantly reduce nodule size and improve symptoms without the need for an incision, general anesthesia, or a prolonged recovery.
